Blue Monday was dubbed as the saddest day of the year by psychologist Cliff Arnall. This was concluded by considering post-holiday blues, bad weather, debt, and low motivation levels.

In terms of how to combat the winter blues, Johanna Constantinou from the firm Tapi Carpets & Floors has considered how the colour blue can actually help people deal with depressive symptoms experienced throughout Blue Monday and the winter period. In an indoor environment, walls and furniture colours affect the perception of the space and induce different emotions and psychological states.

The focus on blue is because the colour is also known to have a calming effect, helping many to feel relaxed and centred. According to Colour Psychology, there are many psychological benefits of blue such as lowering heart rates, blood pressure and improving both focus and productivity. Using this colour in your interiors can help people to unwind and destress while also giving a sense of concentration and mental clarity.

According to Constantinou: “The easiest way to add this colour into your interior space and make an impact is by painting your walls blue or using a blue wallpaper. At bay for the moment were tremors caused by Parkinson’s disease affecting her muscle control.

She could do things others take for granted, like write crisply with a pen or hold a cup of coffee without spilling.

The reprieve shared by the Canadian woman at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas came thanks to a GyroGlove.

“It’s a life changer for me,” said Wilson-Garrett, describing how GyroGlove stopped tremors that make seemingly simple tasks like getting dressed a challenge.

GyroGear has built the world’s most advanced hand stabilizer, with strategic partners that include Chinese technology group Foxconn, according to founder Dr. Faii Ong.

The key to GyroGlove is an attached gyroscope about the size of a hockey puck but with a disk inside that spins faster than a jet engine turbine, according to Ong.

“That glove is made in the same factory that makes your MacBook Pros,” Ong said, referring to Foxconn being a supplier for Silicon Valley superstar Apple.

The plan is to miniaturize the gyroscope with future iterations of the glove.

“We want to bring the focus away from the disease and back onto the fact that this is human life we are talking about,” Ong said.

“That is what tech should do; it’s more important to focus back on ourselves as people and to understand how we can actually make people’s lives better.”

Massachusetts-based GyroGear was one of an array of companies at CES seeking to use tech to improve life for people with infirmities or disabilities

Startups like Glidance and stalwarts like Amazon were among companies packed into a section of the Venetian hotel and casino displaying technology meant to improve life for people with disabilities.

Glidance founder Amos Miller, who lost his vision early in life, demonstrated a compact, two-wheeled device that acts as a guide dog of sorts for walkers who can’t see.

Glide can be given a destination and lead the way for someone holding its handle, or be easily pushed along sensing obstacles and steering users along safe routes.

“You simply walk, and the wheels will steer,” Miller told AFP as he demonstrated the device.

“I can tell it where to go if I want, but it will resist me bumping into anything.”

The Seattle-based startup plans to launch a beta program for Glide later this year and make it as easy to afford as a smartphone.

Another Seattle startup called OneCourt has created what looks like a toy sized replica of an American football field which converts real-time updates from a sports match into vibrations.

Visually impaired sports fans can place a hand on the faux field to feel action playing out in a game.

The device can work with a gamut of sports including tennis, hockey, and American football.

“We’re excited to be making live sports more accessible to people with visual disabilities,” said OneCourt chief executive Jerred Mace.

“Basically, trying to get people closer to the action.”

Vibrations on the device provide a sense of factors such as how fast a ball or puck is moving, where players are on a field and how they are maneuvering.

Mace hopes the yet-to-be released device will be made available through partnerships with teams or leagues, free for use by visually impaired fans at games.

Innovations on display at CES included technology-packed glasses for the blind from Lumen that let wearers know where it is safe to walk, even avoiding puddles.

There were glasses with frames that doubled as hearing aids as well as eyewear to offset visual impairments or even dyslexia.

Offerings from Israel-based Orcam included handheld scanners that read and even translate text for students with learning disabilities or young immigrants just learning English.

“Accessibility is the best use of technology,” said Techsponential analyst Avi Greengart.

But drivers should also be aware that manufacturing-related safety issues can arise at any time, even years after they purchase their vehicles. These sometimes life-threatening mechanical or electrical problems can force car manufacturers to issue recalls, often asking car owners to bring their vehicles into their local dealership for a free repair or replacement part.

Insurify identified the eight recalls affecting the most vehicles in 2023, using data from the Department of Transportation. Recalls on cars and their components have potentially affected up to 27.5 million vehicles so far this year.

The recalls can affect a relatively small group of cars (like the Honda recall on some CR-V frames that may become rusted and detached) or an immense number of vehicles (like the ongoing court fight over a defective air bag inflator that may affect 25 million cars from various manufacturers). In the past three years, Ford has issued the most recalls.

If you don’t see your car listed below, go to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website and input your car’s VIN number to double-check that there are no recalls.

#8. Honda partial frame structure detachment

– Cars affected: 2007-2011 Honda CR-Vs

In states where deicing salt is often used on snowy roads, drivers of some Hondas may face an increased risk of their car accumulating rust, which could possibly make them lose control of their vehicles.

In May 2023, Honda notified drivers of some 2007-2011 CR-Vs that salt corrosion might cause a detached rear trailing arm, which is part of the suspension system and connects a car’s axle to the main body of the frame. When the trailing arms become disconnected, drivers could lose control of their cars, increasing the risk of a crash. Honda officials asked those drivers to bring their CR-Vs into a dealership for a free inspection. Dealers can install a support brace, repair the rear frame, or in some cases, offer to buy back the car.

The recall affects cars purchased or registered in Canada and the following states are included: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Washington D.C., West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

#7. General Motors child seat anchors

– Cars affected: 2020-2023 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles

Parents using Chevrolet Equinox or GMC Terrain vehicles should pay close attention to a General Motors recall that went out earlier this year.

The LATCH anchorage bars, or small metal locations in back seats that caregivers use to install a child’s car seat, may be ineffective. In their recall of 2020-2023 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles, GM officials explained that the anchorage bars may have too much powder coating (a type of dried paint) that prevents drivers from installing children’s seats. GMC officials advised drivers to use the cars’ rear seat belts to secure the child seats until they are able to get to a dealer, which will inspect the bars and replace the powder coating if needed.

#6. Nissan ignition key shutoff

– Cars affected: 2014-2020 Rogue and 2017-2022 Rogue Sport vehicles

Nissan Rogue vehicles could, well, go rogue due to a finicky key design. Those driving the 2014-2020 Rogue and 2017-2022 Rogue Sport who have a “jackknife style” ignition key—the kind where the metal key flips outward from the keyfob—should take their car into the dealership for inspection, according to a Nissan recall.

A driver may accidentally bump the key fob and push it into a folded position, which would shut off the car while they are driving and create an unsafe situation. If this occurs, drivers are at an increased risk of a crash, and the car’s air bags may not deploy properly. Dealerships can place a spacer into the ignition’s key slot to solve the issue.

For drivers who can’t get to a dealership right away, it may be best to get rid of any hanging keychains that might pull on the key fob. Call Nissan’s customer service at 1-800-867-7669 with questions.

#5. Ford parking brake

Some Ford F-150 truck drivers might experience a wiring system defect that could unexpectedly trigger the electric parking brake. For trucks with a single exhaust system, a rear wiring bundle can chafe against the rear axle housing, causing it to short circuit and activate the parking brake, according to The Associated Press.

Drivers might see a warning message or a parking brake warning light. Ford encourages the drivers to contact their local dealership for an appointment or call 1-866-436-7332.

#4. General Motors air bags

– Cars affected: 2014-2017 Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, and GMC Acadia vehicles

General Motors recalled some cars with defective air bag inflators that may explode and launch shrapnel, which could seriously injure or hurt people. GM was one of the first dealers to issue a recall due to the inflators, following the death of a Michigan mom who was in a minor crash in 2021 and was subsequently struck by metal fragments in her Chevy Traverse.

However, the NHTSA says more than a dozen automakers use the same inflators, produced by ARC Automotive Inc., and “… at least 25 million of the 284 million vehicles on U.S. roads are believed to contain them,” according to AP.

Other car brands that may have the same inflators include BMW, Ford, Toyota, Buick, Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, Hyundai, Stellantis, and Kia. The NHTSA has pushed for a full-scale recall, but ARC has refused, leading to a potential battle in court.

NHTSA claims ARC inflators caused at least seven injuries and two deaths since 2009, and estimates the likelihood of a similar rupture occurring as 1 in 370,000.

Backup cameras on some Hondas may not work properly, company officials announced this summer. The affected cars include 2018-2023 Odysseys, 2019-2022 Pilots, and 2019-2023 Passports. A cable connector in the media-oriented systems transport may be defective and prevent the backup camera’s live video from appearing on the display screen.

#2. Ford front brake hoses

A leaky brake hose in some 2013-2018 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles could increase the risk of a crash. Ford recalled the vehicles and instructed dealers to replace the front brake hoses free of charge, according to documents posted on the NHTSA website.

Drivers might see a brake fluid warning light if a leak occurs, and according to Consumer Reports, drivers “may also notice changes in how the brake pedal feels when it’s pushed down and that it takes longer to stop the vehicle.”

Ford recalled some Lincoln MKX SUVs and Ford Edges in 2020 for a similar problem.

#1. Hyundai and Kia fire risk

Hyundai and Kia are recalling several of their cars after discovering that they may catch fire.

In Hyundais, the anti-lock brake system can leak, trigger an electrical shortage, and ultimately cause a fire in the engine area. In Kias, the cause of fire may be a similar part, called the hydraulic electronic control unit, short-circuiting and causing the fire. The parts were produced by HL Mando Corp., or Mando.

Affected Hyundais include 2011-2015 Elantra, Genesis Coupe, Sonata Hybrid, 2012-2015 Accent, Azera, Veloster, 2013-2015 Elantra Coupe, Santa Fe, 2014-2015 Equus, 2010-2012 Veracruz, 2010-2013 Tucson, 2015 Tucson Fuel Cell, and 2013 Santa Fe Sport vehicles.

Affected Kias include 2010-2019 Borrego SUVs, 2014-2016 Cadenza SUVs, 2010-2013 Forte and Forte Koup sedans and coupes, 2015-2018 K900 sedans, 2011-2015 Optima sedans, 2012-2017 Rio sedans and hatchbacks, 2010-2011 Rondo hatchbacks, 2011-2014 Sorento SUVs, 2011-2013 Soul hatchbacks, and 2010-2013 Sportage SUVs.

The carmakers noted that the cars can catch fire while parked or driving, and asked drivers to park outside and away from buildings until a dealer is able to repair the issue. Hyundai says it will mail notification letters to vehicle owners in November 2023.

Reflecting on the 2023 fall semester, and especially October’s Tutor Appreciation Week, it is worth taking a moment to consider the crucial role tutors play in our education system. Tutors are often considered education’s “first responders,” but they, like many of us, report being overworked and underpaid, compared to the value they bring. While public school systems and higher education institutions use their resources in attempts to provide every service they can to their students; when a student struggles, it is up to tutoring services to fill the gap — no matter how large. 

Campus and district in-person tutoring services are useful tools, but they can’t be everywhere at once. They often lack the funding to be available for students late at night, on weekends, or on holidays. In many cases, it may be difficult or impossible to staff qualified tutors for specific subjects. Students and caregivers may not have the ability to pay for the help they need out of pocket. That is where virtual online tutoring services come in. These platforms pride themselves in their 24/7, year-round availability, assisting students who otherwise may not be able to fit personalized tutoring into their schedules. 

One such company is NetTutor, a service created by Link Systems International (LSI). Launched in 1996, NetTutor aimed to augment student support through virtual tutoring, a completely unorthodox approach at the time. “Our mission is to bridge the digital gap, offering not just tutoring, but a personal connection that motivates students to succeed. We believe that the human element is the heart of education, and we bring it to life in every session,” said Vincent Forese, President of LSI. “In a world where so much is automated, that sense of connection has become even more important in inspiring students.” 

A surge of other online tutoring services emerged in recent years, many spurred by the necessity and increased funding created in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Increasingly overworked instructors have the responsibility of identifying and addressing all their students’ unique learning gaps, which is an impossible task. That is why some online tutoring services seek to distinguish themselves by offering state-of-the-art progress monitoring to reduce the workload for instructors and administrators. Martine Stevens, Director of Tutoring at Columbus State Community College, noted the difference that NetTutor’s reporting features made in helping her school’s students: “Columbus State students value NetTutor’s convenient hours and flexible options for meeting face-to-face or dropping off questions, and know they can rely on the tutors for timely, skilled academic support. We’re given access to useful data reports and updates, and always get quick and reliable responses whenever we have questions. NetTutor is an excellent resource for our students and a great complement to our on-campus tutoring services.” Awareness of student usage is an important component in developing these programs, and at-a-glance monitoring for administrators is essential for tracking student performance and initiating interventions when necessary. 

However, as tutoring companies grapple with making their platforms as interactive as possible, accessibility remains a key consideration in development. Providing technologies like voice-to-text, text-to-voice, and screen readers ensures all students have equitable access to support. A NetTutor student, Faith, commented on the benefits of increased access to help with her precalculus assignments: “I think the tutoring really helps me as a student with a disability. In an online environment, it really helps to have the 24/7 availability, especially in accelerated classes.” Students sometimes don’t ask for, and in some cases, maybe are not even aware of accommodations they need, but on-demand virtual tutoring removes many of the barriers between students and adequate support. 

Tutors also must be attuned to the pace of the session and encourage the students to take their time or ask for help, all while maintaining a patient and inclusive learning environment. The tutor-tutee interaction helps students overcome learning obstacles while building their independence. “I know there are students out there who feel more comfortable in who they are and what they are doing, and I had something to do with that. There’s nothing better than that feeling, nothing at all,” said Keriston, who has tutored Humanities at NetTutor for more than 10 years. 

Forese states, “The empathy that tutors bring to each student they work with is something that cannot be replicated by an algorithm. Student support is an ongoing and evolving process, not just once a year.” Live tutors, both in-person and virtual, help students build the confidence to explore their learning potential. That is certainly something learners, caregivers, and educators can appreciate every day of the year.

Q & A interview

As a speaker and advocate for positive change, how do you engage with your audience and inspire them to take action in their own lives?

Most of my clients come through referrals, networking, and speaking engagements. It is my favorite way of connecting because I believe there is nothing better than in-person communication. The next best thing is connecting with video conferencing tools where you can see the person.

What is it like to be an author in today’s world with technology so prevalent, and so many tools at your fingertips to utilize?

I’m glad you asked. We’ve come a long way since the typewriter – the primary technology for authors for sixty years until personal computers arrived in the ’80s. By comparison, laptops and editing software made it physically easier. Imagine lugging around your typewriter and reams of paper when you travel.

The point of this setting is that writing a book is not about the physical but the mental effort it requires. You first need a vision and purpose before writing the first line.

To remain authentic, this is best if it is 100 percent human-driven. Modern technologies, like generative A.I.s, can write the entire book for you. However, I chose not to use any A.I. tools for “Brain Science for the Soul,” or any of my previous books. I believe humans are perfectly imperfect, and we need to embrace that first and foremost.

What inspired you to write the book “11 Ways to Improve Your Human Condition,” and what message do you hope readers take away from it?

I wrote this book in response to what I called ‘CoronaVirus PTSD.’ As the pandemic unfolded, I carefully tracked the devastating impact on businesses and individuals.

The magnitude of disruption was wide and deep. With my research and feedback on webinar presentations I gave on managing disruptions, I decided to dedicate ’11 Ways to Improve Your Human Condition’ to address the PTSD-like symptoms that millions of people were suffering through.

I aimed to empower people towards the future with new wisdom by introducing some brain science concepts with VUCA – Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity. When equipped with the right tools, people can build the skills to manage more effectively during tough times.

Can you highlight a key insight from your book “Brain Science for the Soul” that you believe will have a major impact on how leaders approach their roles?

The book is intentionally human-centric [100% human-certified written] and raw, and it challenges leaders to transcend from the knowledge-based economy to the learning economy. I’m not talking about a pivot here.

I’m talking about the courage to ask deeper questions and truly discover who you are – how your brain works, whether it is working for you or against you, and its intersection with your Soul. Why? Because if you don’t know who you are, how can you possibly know where you are going?

Research has shown that 95 percent of people don’t know themselves as much as they think they do, which is why Brain Science is critical in leadership and professional development.

Can you discuss any upcoming projects or initiatives you’re working on that align with the themes of your books?

Thank you for asking. I recognize that a book alone can only go so far so I’m developing a series of courses, programs, and workshops to empower leaders and knowledge professionals with tools and techniques to conquer challenges, anticipate and manage disruptions effectively, and learn how to transform their company and teams to become future-ready.

The first part to be launched will be announced on January 18 with others to follow.

Sandstone Care analyzed data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to find which states have the highest rates of teenagers diagnosed with depression. This was measured by the percentage of individuals aged 12 to 17 who have a primary diagnosis of depression as a share of all teens receiving treatment at a mental health facility monitored by that state in 2021.

Depression was the most common diagnosis among teens receiving mental health treatment in 2021, according to data compiled and recently released by the Department of Health and Human Services. It accounts for 1 in 5 diagnoses, up slightly from 2016.

While impossible to attribute a mental health diagnosis to a single cause, one factor has undeniably left a widespread impact: COVID-19. In 2021, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy released a special advisory directed at recognizing and protecting risks to youth mental health in the wake of COVID-19, including actionable directed suggestions for youth, families, educators, employers, health professionals, media organizations, and social media companies, among others.

Following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in the spring of 2020, young people were particularly negatively affected by stay-at-home orders, which shifted them to remote learning, deprived them of formative social experiences, and increasingly isolated an already naturally lonely age group. Among young people, LGBTQ+ and socioeconomically disadvantaged teens, as well as those from communities of color, were already particularly vulnerable pre-pandemic. After the onset of COVID-19, they were disproportionately affected by the pandemic.

Each state operates its mental health administration differently. Wisconsin, for instance, regulates private facilities and individual practitioners, whereas Missouri specifically earmarks funds for juvenile and family court systems to provide mental health services. The following states did not report sufficient data and were excluded from this report: Florida, Maine, Ohio, and South Dakota.

Mental health care for teens differs across the US

While depression remained a predominant diagnosis for teenagers nationwide, the story in every state was not the same. The reasons for disparate care vary, from true differences in depression levels to unequal youth access to care. Many teens lack insurance that adequately covers mental health care, with Medicaid, in particular, offering unreliable or inadequate access. Discrepancies between data collection and how each state prioritizes mental health care also play a role.

Missouri uniquely includes mental health services received in juvenile detention centers, as the state focuses on providing rehabilitation to youth offenders. This was instituted under the Improving Community Treatment Success program—aimed at providing long-term support to incarcerated persons struggling with mental health—in hopes that it will lessen their chances of reoffending. The program was piloted in 2018 and was deemed successful enough to expand the following year.

Connecticut, on the other hand, regulates mental health treatment at what the state calls a “Private Intermediate Treatment Facility,” defined as a dedicated institution for addressing mental health “problems, disturbances, dysfunctions or disorders” that don’t require hospital-level care.

“Access to care” can be a vague concept to a certain degree because it encompasses many moving parts. These include identifying whether one should seek private or integrated care, obtaining insurance coverage for costs, and sometimes long wait times and delays.

According to Mental Health America, the best states for accessing care were generally located in New England and the Great Plains, including Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. The worst was in the South, including South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee. These are also states where there are higher rates of mental health professional shortages, which is more common in rural areas of the country.

How state and federal government entities are responding

Spurred by the alarming rise in mental health disorder rates, many organizations and government entities realize the difficulties teens and their families are having in accessing mental health care and are working to make a change.

The Health Resources and Services Administration has worked to enable pediatric primary care providers to collaborate more closely with mental health professionals, providing nearly $25 million toward training resources to strengthen school-based mental health resources. SAMHSA has also awarded millions of dollars in funding to expand community mental health services and state agencies and for the American Academy of Pediatrics to establish the National Center of Excellence on Social Media and Mental Wellness.

Lost Trail Ski Area, Montana

Sitting atop the Continental Divide is Lost Trail Ski Area, on the Montana-Idaho border. Usually overlooked for its more popular and expensive neighbor, Big Sky, this family-owned destination in Sula was founded to keep skiing affordable and accessible. With an adult day pass that costs $63, steeply discounted prices for older adults, and a free lift pass for children 5 and younger, it is hard to find a more family-friendly option.

Lost Trail also has 69 trails and 300 inches of annual snow, making for reliable powder days. Off the slopes, the nearby Triple Creek Ranch offers a real taste of Montana with beautiful log cabins, horseback riding, and dog sledding. If the water isn’t frozen, be sure to grab a fly-fishing pole to check out phenomenal angling on the Bitterroot River.

Snowshoe Mountain, West Virginia

Those living on the other side of the country will be happy to know they can skip the flights out west, as country roads will take you to a mid-Atlantic ski destination worth the drive: Snowshoe Mountain. Ikon Pass holders can ski for free, but for those without a pass, prices fluctuate depending on the day.

The resort features 244 acres of terrain, not as many as others but enough to fill a weekend with friends. With snowmobile tours, night skiing, and a tube park to terrain parks to test your skills, Snowshoe has a lot to offer. After a day on the slopes, warm up at the Old Spruce Tavern with slow-cooked beef brisket and a Happy Trails IPA. This mountain town boasts a rich history of craftspeople and artisans; find pottery, glassware, and jewelry made by locals in Snowshoe’s quaint village.

Wolf Creek Ski Area, Colorado

Colorado offers 39 ski resorts, among which are some of the most popular in the U.S., including Snowmass, Breckenridge, and Vail. But if you want to find the most snow in the Centennial State, head to Wolf Creek Ski Area in Pagosa Springs. With adult day passes starting at $89 and discounted prices for older adults and kids, visitors can enjoy one of the best destinations in Colorado without breaking the bank.

Skiers and snowboarders can also take in panoramic alpine views while shredding through 144 runs, from beginner to double black diamond slopes. Afterward, soak in the “world’s deepest geothermal hot springs.” Skip the long lines and crowded slopes for this gorgeous resort OnTheSnow named the #1 Small Ski Area in North America. And you don’t have to leave your furry family members behind on this adventure—dogs are welcome.

Grand Targhee Resort, Wyoming

Just 42 miles from the famous Jackson Hole Mountain Resort sits the not-so-famous Grand Targhee Resort in Alta. But this fun-filled mountain is a hidden gem. On the west side of Grand Teton, skiers can find deep snow and slopes for all levels. Its 2,602 acres of skiable terrain give you enough room to shred all weekend. Explore the backcountry of the Teton Range with guided tours, or participate in one of the many races and competitions the resort hosts. At night, skiers can relax in the heated outdoor pool or trade in their poles for bloody marys at the Trap Bar & Grill, which touts live music. The laid-back atmosphere of Grand Targhee and its excellent trail system make it one of the best-kept ski secrets.

Whiteface Mountain, New York

Whiteface Mountain offers the greatest vertical drop (3,430 feet) east of the Rockies. Nestled in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains, this Wilmington, New York, mountain stands 4,867 feet tall. The high peak gets overshadowed by destinations such as Vermont’s Killington Ski Resort and Stowe Mountain Resort.

Only a five-hour drive from New York City or Boston, it is easily accessible from multiple major airports. You can also ski Skyward, the Olympic-worthy black diamond trail athletes raced down in the 1980 Games. Whiteface was also voted #1 for Down Day Activities in the East by Ski Magazine in 2019. That means when you tire of shredding its 94 trails or landing tricks at the terrain parks, you can stroll through the Adirondacks’ breathtaking walk at High Falls Gorge.

This fact has not escaped the attention of lawmakers. The Affordable Care Act, often known as Obamacare, was passed in 2010 to address America’s health coverage gaps. The central portions of the act came into law in 2014 and had a drastic impact almost immediately. The share of Americans aged 18-64 without health insurance fell from around 15% to less than 10%. The latest data suggests just 7.7% of adults under 65 lacked health coverage in the first quarter of 2023.

These results have been a drastic victory for the bill’s proponents, but the headline numbers significantly downplay how much risk Americans still face. Care Better looked at research in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal to understand why this might be the case. Their work shows that a startling one-quarter of Americans between 18 and 64 can expect to lose their health coverage at some point two years after they first sign up for insurance.

Some people are at much higher risk of losing their coverage than others

The main reason for this discrepancy is that typical statistics only capture a snapshot of the population and do not account for the risk that a specific individual might lose their health insurance. People relying on Medicaid for health coverage can lose their plans for a whole host of reasons, including if they receive a raise that pushes them out of eligibility or if they move to another state with different qualification criteria. People who lose their jobs can lose their employer-sponsored health plans or be unable to afford plans they bought through private exchanges.

People with Medicaid or who buy their insurance through private exchanges are especially at risk. These individuals have a roughly 20% chance of losing their coverage in the first two years after enrolling. In contrast, people who get their insurance through their employers have less than a 10% chance of losing their plan over the same interval.

Some demographics are at higher risk of losing their health insurance than others. The study found that people with fewer educational qualifications, younger people, and Hispanic and Black Americans are especially likely to lose their insurance within two years of starting a new plan. These groups are both more likely to be enrolled in Medicaid and less likely than white Americans to work at jobs that have employer-sponsored health care coverage. Moreover, around half of those who lose their insurance do so for at least six months, while about a quarter remain uninsured for over two years.

In addition to the direct risks Americans face by not having health insurance, the study notes that inconsistent coverage can also force people into delaying vital health procedures. Spotty coverage can also confuse people about the services their plans cover or whether they have health coverage at all.

America’s health insurance woes are not just about the “permanently uninsured,” but also what the authors call the “transiently uninsured,” explaining that being insured is a dynamic state.
